Posting a job is free, takes ten minutes, and puts your project in front of every relevant freelancer on the platform. Yet half of all job posts get mediocre proposals for one reason: the post itself gives freelancers nothing to work with. 'Need a designer, budget flexible' attracts exactly the quality it deserves. Here is how the best clients write posts, and why their inbox looks different.
The anatomy of a great job post
Six elements, in order:
- A specific title: 'Logo + menu design for a new burger place in Batroun', not 'Designer needed'
- One paragraph of context: what the business is, who the customers are
- Exact deliverables: 'logo with source files, A4 menu print-ready, Instagram highlight covers'
- A real budget range: it filters out mismatches in both directions
- The deadline, including any hard date like an opening or an event
- What you will provide: photos, text, brand colors, examples you like
On budgets: state one, always
Clients hide budgets fearing they will overpay. The opposite happens: without a range, strong freelancers skip the post (their time is limited) and you get proposals from $20 to $2,000 that teach you nothing. A stated range attracts freelancers who genuinely work at that level and lets them propose the best scope for it.
Reading the proposals
Discard anything that is clearly pasted. What remains, judge on three signals: did they reference your actual project, does their portfolio contain similar work, and did they ask at least one intelligent question. The freelancer who asks 'is the menu single-language or Arabic-English?' before quoting will also catch problems during the project.
Reply speed matters too: someone who answers within hours during hiring will communicate the same way during delivery.
